Yes, we are close, try this:
Delete the file from here:
C:\Windows\System32\ousbehcI

Also Open the Registry editor and locate the service and remove it from
there ( you can backup only the Key you will edit as reg to the Desktop or my
document if any thing gone wrong you can restore/Import to the same key to
restore it)
Close the Registry editor and Reboot your machine, do you get the error?.
To explain for you why you have because the HDD still keep the old
motherboard drivers on it's system32 and the registry as entry ( orphans) and
I don't why suddenly started nagging you LOL.

to my computer until it failed just under a year ago. It was based on Via

drivers folder), is a folder called ousb2hub. This folder when opened

When I place the mouse pointer over the file folders in System 32 Drivers,
it shows the following:-
ousbhub - USB 2.0 Hub Driver. Company:Orangeware Corporation
ousbehcI - USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller Driver. Company: Orangeware
Corporation.
I believe the USB drivers on my system are the generic Microsoft drivers,
having checked in Device Manager.
What I can't say is whether there is anything on my system which depends on
the OrangeWare drivers.

I am a little nervous about editing the Registry as you suggest, since I
have never done this before.
When you say rename the file folder ousbehci, do you mean by right clicking,
and re-typing the name ousbehci.old? Does this work the same in the Registry?

I think we are close to a solution.

Try to have a look in the Event Viewer and double click the Error Messages
(X) to get more info and you can copy and paste in your next post.
What USB devices might you have that are on power saving?
reinstall your USB drivers, not only for the devices, but your chip set
drivers or drivers for your USB adapter.

Try with clean boot and see if that will help:

I did disable the USB enhanced host controller, and unfortunately it tripped
out my ADSL modem! Something to do with disabling USB 2.0 support.
I don't have any other USB hubs other than "root hubs" and most of them are
occupied with printer, scanner, joystick etc. so I am a bit wary about
disabling them.

Right click My Computer and Select properties, then click on Hardware tab
then click Device manager.
Scroll and locate the USB and click the Plus [+] sign to expand and see
there USB Hub and Disable from running on the System click [OK] after done
your changes.

Run disk cleanUp and delete your temporary internet files and Reboot does
the Error come back?.
