With "Automatically restart" (Properties | Advanced | Settings | StartupThank you for your suggestions. By disabling all non-Microsoft Services
and Recovery) disabled, a "blue screen" stop notice provides the
following information:
Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804F2F51, 0xF1FA07A8, 0x00000000)
Each time the computer is shut down or rebooted, the message is always
the same except for the segment "FA0". Among the other symbols that occur
in that position are "C11" and "AD9"... and so on. The rest of the
message is unchanged. Upon reboot (via front PC button) the process is
very prolonged and ultimately I am informed that the computer has
recovered from a serious error. After this, the PC appears to function
normally --- until it is again off/on recycled.
The recovery files that are created at each instance of closing down or
rebooting are producing serious bloat on my C drive.
When this problem first occurred, MS suggested (Article ID: 311806) that
a possible problem might be with Roxio ECDC 5.0 (I have 8.0). I deleted
this program, but with no effect. I then deleted a large number of Temp
and other junk files. I thought I had found the problem!!! The PC would
turn off/reboot with no indicated problem --- for approximately 5 or 6
cycles, but then the "problem" returned!
Is there any way to identify the "culprit" without wandering through
endless "possible" solutions?
I brought up this problem earlier under the subject: "Turn Off reverts to
Restart".
Any guidance would be appreciated.

(via msconfig) I find that the problem described above is eliminated. The
"services" were re-added one by one until the offending service was
identified as Photoshop Elements 3.0. I have uninstalled this program
(may try reinstallation later) and my PC is no longer reporting errors at
Turn Off, Turn On, or Restart.
My problem now is how to eliminate the huge bloat of "restore" information
that occupies my C drive; the frequent errors at shut down and start up
have each added restore files that are no longer of use.

You could try www.ccleaner.com/ that will get rid of the crap and do other
checks if you wish on registry Freeware.
