Hi all, Yes, I'm a newbie and this is my very first post, so I hope I
do
everything right....here goes....
When I reboot my computer, I have two windows that pop up....
the back on is a log on window titled
GINA Logon and it has two spaces...
User Name (and Administrator is filled in)
Password (blank)
but the second window pops up over it and it says...
Logon Message
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction
I can then click ok and it will boot
If I don't sit here and hit the enter button a million times, the
Windows loading screen comes up over them both and it can take 30
mins
or more for it to come up with my User choices (1 being my name and 1
being Guest). Sometimes I have to reboot 10 times or more to get
that
enter button hit at just the right time so that I can click thru the
error message and load my computer to get back to work. I'm getting
really tired of doing this and hate to reboot no matter what because
of
it.
I found a solution on the Microsoft support site, but the first thing
it tells you to do is ...
1. Click START, point to RUN, type gpedit.msc, then click ok...
so I have tried this a million times and I do not have a file titled
gpedit.msc. I just get another message telling me that it can't be
found.
The other option it offered was to set a user password, so I went
into
the user that is my name and set a password, but it didn't change
anything.. it still comes up with the boxes mentioned above. Of
course,
when I saw the word GINA, I thought a neighbor was stealing my
internet
or something crazy like that ! :-) Then I read that its a legitimate
file name.
Can someone help me figure this out so that I can shut my computer
down
at times without the worry or endless wait for it to be accessable
again?
Thanks so much!

MrsWWonka-
I think because you may Have Windows XP Home Edition not XP Pro?.
This for XP Home Edition:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290109
This for XP pro if you have it:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303846
Another one to try is open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 shgina.dll CLICK [OK]
Reboot your machine and see if it will resolve the problem.
If still no joy try to delete the GINADLL entry from the Registry but
back
this Key before you go ahead and modify the Registry (just the Key).
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK} on the Registry Editor locate this KEY:
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft \Windows NT \ CurrentVersion
\
Winlogon = in the Right Delete the GINADLL
HTH.
Let us know.

Ok, first Thank You for responding to my post!
Second, I'm stuck again ....
I tried the first of your suggestions, went to the correct help page
and followed the instructions for the Home Edition (Thank you!), but it
didn't change the fact that the windows came up.
Then...
I tried the second suggestion with the Run Command.
After rebooting, the windows still came up, but now they don't mention
GINA.
The first window says :
LOG ON TO WINDOWS
User : Administrator
Password : (now has the password that I had set in the first attempt to
correct from the correct Home edition page)
The second window is the same as before :
Logon Message
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction.
Again, I have to sit and hit the enter key AFTER the lights on my
keyboard flash in the hope to hit it at just the right time that it
catches those windows and doesn't go into the Windows loading screen,
or I can't go behind it to clear them and my computer just sits. It
takes up to 10 times to get it just right sometimes. Very frustrating!
I was afraid to try the last suggestion because it dealt with the GINA
DLL file and its not mentioning GINA now. Should I still try it? Are
the instructions that you show, also including the way to back it up as
you suggested?
I get scared when messing with files! LOL!
Thanks again !!
