CMOS checksum error

Thanks for the help. There is no label on what I imagine is the battery and
I can't get it out anyway. Also, the clock now reverts to Jan 2002 whenever
I reboot no matter how many times I reset and synchronise. I shall probably
dump the machine!!
As a matter of interest, why does the machine start if the battery is
dead/damaged? Where would I find CMOS checksum in order to configure ir?
.
