Re: Up a creek

All,

I guess I'd like to chime in on this topic, as it I noticed it now
affects me. I don't know how long my DVD drive has been missing, but I
know I have used it a few times with in the past 30 days.

I find the drive is no longer visible in the My Computer screen, and I
have an unknown PCI device in my device manager, which I assume is the
drive. The drive it self has worked without issue in the past and for
the record is a Sony DRU 800A with the latest firmware (KY06).

The drive itself still seems to function to the best of my abilities
to test it. The BIOS on my motherboard sees it while booting and
correctly identifies it. I can also put in a bootable CD and it will
read and boot from the disc. I used my original XP disk for the test.
However, the drive simply dose not exsist in Windows.

I am using XP Pro SP2 and don't recall installing any new software as
of late, but there have been a few Windows Updates, not sure if those
made it cut out. I as of now have tried every solution I have been
able to find. I have done the Upper/Lowerfilter fix, used the Doug
Knox fix along with one other program I found to work on forums. I
have tried to uninstall the device and reinstall it to no avail
either. My computer time is correct also. None of these fixes fixed my
drive.

Most of what else I find on the web deals with the Upper/Lowerfilter
deletion. I am out of ideas. I'm willing to take any suggestions at
this point. Also, if some one might, I'd like to see the registry key
that one is to edit with the upper/lowerfilter fix. It is the
{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} key. I'd like to see a working
key from someones computer for reference. Maybe I'll see something.

Did you reboot after running Doug Knox's fix? (required).
Since you can boot with your xp cd this is not your dvd drive it is a
windows problem.

As far as the registry to look for this info comes from kellys-korner.com

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the
following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to the branch indicated above, locate
the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Right click each and select
Delete.

If you desire, you can right click on the {4D36E965..........} branch and
select Export. This will create a REG file that can be re-imported should
you find a need to.

You may also want to delete the following 4 Registry keys, as per the
instructions above:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr

Good Luck!
P.S. I have the same make/model and firmware as you do, try Doug's fix again
and reboot, can't hurt anything I had to do it a few times after I
uninstalled Roxio.
