My internet connection seems to go dead after my computer has been on for
awhile (sometimes 6 hours, sometimes 5 minutes), giving no indication that
anything is wrong except the fact that I can't load any webpages or run any
programs that require internet access.
The only thing that seems to be common to these occurrences is that when I
restart the computer (sometimes, presumably, several hours after the
connection has died and sometimes within a few seconds of noticing it has
died), the little yellow "downloading updates" thing shows up in my system
tray, leading me to believe that maybe the two events are connected (though I
have tried disabliing the automatic updtaes and it still happens).
Anybody have any insight into this?

yeah i tried that (for the record it is a card in the back of my computer)
same problem persists
again, it's weird because i never see the little yellow "downloading
updates" thing, like, ever, except right after windows starts up, often after
i've restarted because i seem to suddenly no longer be connected to the
internet, for no apparent reason
Try this:
Turn Windows Updates OFF ( for Now) and perform this clean up procedure:
Open windows Explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution = Delete all Folders in the Right
Pane/Window.
Then Right click (C:\) and select Properties then click on Disk CleanUp.
Download this Tool for wins*** fixer or you can repair it manually:
Manual repair;
Open Run type in:
netsh winsock reset click [OK] and Reboot your machine.
For Tool winsock fixer:

HTH.
Let us know your progress.

ok so i tried all that (though it won't let me delete the DataStore
directory or the ReportingEvents file because it says they're being used),
deleted the directories, did the disk cleanup, and ran the winsock fixer,
problem still persists, everything's working and then suddenly downloads
stop, or outlook is not accessible, or pages won't load, restart,
connection's back, and as soon as windows starts up it starts downloading
updates
any other ideas?
thanks for all the help by the way, sorry this is such a riddle
