As noted, your system may not have come with backup. But a good
question to ask is what exactly you want to back up.. the system
backup from ntbackup won't give you a bootable backup. You'd still
have to reinstall XP should the system fail.
If you are really looking for a backup with that kind of feature,
look for an imaging program like Acronis TrueImage or Ghost.

Umm, not quite true: ntbackup will indeed ask if you want to make a
disaster recovery floppy (or CD if you don't have a floppy), and it's called
the ASR, Automated System Recovery. You do however have to have your backup
on some type of removal media, tape, DVD, CD, etc..
See below from the Help file:
To recover from a system failure using Automated System Recovery
1.. Make sure you have the following items before you begin the recovery
procedure:
a.. Your previously created Automated System Recovery (ASR) floppy disk.
b.. Your previously created backup media.
c.. The original operating system installation CD.
2.. Insert the original operating system installation CD into your CD
drive.
3.. Restart your computer. If prompted to press a key in order to start
the computer from CD, press the appropriate key.
4.. Press F2 when prompted during the text-only mode section of Setup. You
will be prompted to insert the ASR floppy disk you have previously created.
5.. Follow the directions on the screen.

a.. ASR will not restore your data files. For more information about
backing up and restoring your data files, click Related Topics.
