What's happened to my CD?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I'm running XPHome +SP2. I needed to re-instal my Fujitsu-Siemens drivers off my Driver CD but it failed to autostart. Explorer only showed autorun.inf and 2 folders but missed a load of other files and folders, including autostart.exe. It also did this with my XPHome disc, no auto start. They work in Safe Mode. I've been juggling with restore points and managed to find one that read the CDs properly, then soon afterwards they failed to read again. The other odd thing, whatever other disk I put in the drive, Explorer will show the driver disk (or XP disk) that failed previously. How can I get it to read whatever disk I put in, correctly?
Does anyone have knowledge of this problem? The drive will run a DVD-video OK. Would a virus do this?
Thanks
