can't hear sound other than midi

hey all,
I can't hear any sound coming from my computer (XP) when I play music.
The music plays fine I just can't hear it. The strange thing is that I
am able to hear ok when I play midis, but cannot hear any other type
of sound file.
This worked fine until some time ago when it just stopped working. Any
ideas.
