That can happen if you have installed Third-party Softwares they can
contribute to that issue, yes MS updates have it's own moment but for reason
not just random, try to slipstream the SP2 into your XP CD and if the worse
came to the worse (new install) then you have SP2 installed and there is no
other excuses just stay away from badly written applications that can cause
this issue.
Does your system get Overheated?.
Do you have other Toolbars installed on your browser?.

Investigating for yourself might be the best way.. Post your results..
If your RAM checks out then it can just be ruled out as a possible
contributing factor, I'm sure that's how nass may have felt about it..?
Remember, we can't see your system or know all the numerous contributing
factors that you're familiar with on a day to day basis..
