remove entries from 'add/remove programs'

How do I remove entries from 'add/remove programs' list in the control panel? Where is the 'list' stored?

When I click on the program in the list the error message says "cannot find 'uninstall' file" so cannot proceed.

That file was removed by another program so it is NOT there to find.
