how far does boot get? can you seen an option to load startup

My Son loaded XP Pro on his machine (I think it was a 1st Rev).
Anyway, he decided to upgrade with SP2 using a bootlegged from a
friends machine. It locked the HD up so that the system now will not
boot. He can't even get to any files on his HD. Is there any way he
can back out of this, short of re-formatting his HD and loading a
restore disk. He doesn't want to loose his childs photos, and some
other files he has on that HD.
