Frequent problems with Windows Explorer

I encounter frequent problems with Windows Explorer. Basically, it "hangs"
after a few minutes of usage, regardless of what I'm doing. Dr. Watson
appears about 50% of the time, and when that happens, my PC is guaranteed to
freeze within several seconds ... and the only way to restore functionality
is to shutdown and restart the PC. I've defragged the drive. I've
performed virus checks. I've examined for spyware. I've restored the PC to
an earlier date ... MUCH earlier than when the problem first appeared (about
10 days ago). I've uninstalled all recently-installed programs. STILL, the
problem persists.

I can't imagine what else I could do to resolve the problem (whatever it
might be) so that Windows Explorer doesn't hang, then freeze my PC.
