I posted a problem last week, but got no replies.
I had just finished building a computer system for my daughter. New hard drive, new installation of
an OEM Windows XP PRO SP2 disk and new DVD-RW drive. Everything was working fine for several days,
but the Windows Media Player (version 9) included with XP did not play a DVD movie. So I installed
a WMP version 10 I had on disk. Media player worked and I could view the movie. However, when I
rebooted, I got the logon window (not the Welcome screen) asking for user name and password instead
of the Welcome Screen. When I entered the user name and password it would start to load the desktop,
then give me the logging off window and go back to the logon screen. Same result in the safe mode
and when I attempted to restart with "Last known good start".
Using an ERD Commander boot disk I was able to run the System Restore and then reboot the computer
normally, but now I had no Windows Media Player. Downloaded WMP 11 and installed it. Exactly the
same results as before. I repeated the repair with the ERD Commander and again no WMP. I made 2
more attempts to install WMP with the same results.
Then I found article that talked about a similar problem and suggested a registry repair.
Using ERD Commander, when the computer would not boot, I examined the registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \software \microsoft \windows NT \current version \winlogon
And found it was missing the Userinit key which should have read:
C:\windows\system32\Userinit.exe
I manually added that key and the system booted to the desktop and works fine now.
I did have to configure the User Setting to use the Welcome Screen again and allow Fast Switching,
but I have a working system and I have WMP working.
I hope this information helps someone else.
