Re: Can't open help and support

Thanks again, and just a note- whatever it was that I was trying to fix
(before discovering help & support didn't work) seems to have have disapeared
from memory (mine) Oh well outa sight outa mind. This is turning into a can
of worms, though, but it is beginning to crack me up. I'm only giggling
quietly now, but if I find out I have to fix another thing I'm afraid I will
begin laughing hystericly.
So- * DCOM Server Process Launcher is fine
* Event Log is fine
* Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is fine
* Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) does not show up in services.
I did find "Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions" and "WMI
Performance Adapter", both of which I started, but with no noticable
difference. I will now try Repairing and re-registering the WMI, and wouldn't
be supprised if help and support direct me to go to the nearest mental health
service. Thanks again for everything...I wish there was a memory upgrades for
humans...

"The specified service does not exist as an installed
service".

I am assuming the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service.

Repairing and re-registering the WMI
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

"Can't collect information. Can't access the
Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may
be moved or missing."

Repairing and re-registering the WMI, above may fix this problem also,
but make sure that the following services are set to automatic and are
started:
* DCOM Server Process Launcher
* Event Log
* Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
* Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply | Click Start
When the service starts, click OK |

Scroll down to and double click Event Log | Set Startup type to Automatic |
Click Start | When the service starts click OK |

Scroll down to and double click Windows Management Instrumentation |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Start | When the service starts click
OK |

Scroll down to and double click Remote Procedure Call (RPC) |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Start | When the service starts click
OK |

Close Services and reboot.

FYI, you may have to reboot for some of the services to start, but you need
to reboot anyway.

If that doesn't fix things, there are more things to try.

Hey thanks Wesley! At first it did not seem to help, but when I restarted
the computer the next morning, Help and support was there and working
mostly. It does appear that several of the tools are not functioning. For
example when I click on any of the choices on "My Computer Information",
I get the message "The specified service does not exist as an installed
service". Also the same when I click on "Advanced System Information"
choices, exept that "View detailed System Information (Msinfo32.exe)"
opens a window that says "Can't collect information. Can't access the
Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may
be moved or missing." This also happens with some of the other tools
choices. Any ideas on where those files might be and how to get them bavk
in the right place? And thanks for sharing your knowledge by the way!

when I click on help and support I get an error message that says
'windows cannot open help and support because a system service is not
running. To fix this problem start the service named help and support.'

How do I start this service? The computer with this problem is not
connected to the internet. Is it possible to get partial functioning?
