Hi, Pop, and thanks for the reply.
OUCH! That hurts. Pls see inline:
Here's what I'm doing.
Control Panel>Add or remove programs>User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service. Click on Remove. Get a dialog box "There is a problem with
this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install
to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or
package vendor." I click ok and get another dialog box "Fatal error
during installation."
Download and launch fresh UPH from Microsoft site after I go through
validation successfully. Click on Remove User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service. Identical result as above. Then choose Repair User Profile
Hive Cleanup Service. Get a dialog "The feature you are trying to use
is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again,
or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation
package 'profileclean[1].msi' in the box below."
You ARE downloading the file, as opposed to trying to run it over the
internet, right?
Needless to say, that particular .msi file does not exist anywhere on
my PC (standalone computer connected only to Internet).
That's possible, I think, if you let it install automatically over the
internet, but I'm not sure. Only run it from a downloaded file that is on
your hard drive. That unavailable network resource might be referring to
the internet if you used automatic install over the 'net.
Are you saying profileclean.msi does not exist? The [1] indicates to me
that it exists twice in the same folder, actually. I'll bet there is a [2]
also? BUT ...
Exactly what .msi are your running for the install? uphclean.msi?
profileclean.msi?
"profileclean.msi isn't the program I recommended although I can't seem to
find any past communications with you right now, based on a search for
kweeth and the subject line. I believe I recommended UPHClean from MS, and
to be sure the version was for XP? There IS a profile.msi, but I don't know
what it is or where it's from or if it's for XP.
Also, searching for profileclean.msi on MS doesn't find anything.
Is it possible you got hold of the wrong program? The file for XP is:
UPHClean-Setup.msi 336,896 in size in my download (size can vary), and
the CRC is 1,051,675,341 which again can vary.
Can you check to see if you have the same filesize and CRC by any chance?
Just for grins I downloaded profileclean.msi and, although it seems to
indicate it's for XP, it isn't the one I have, and is an entirely different
file size and CRC than the one I have.
Then, again: Just for grins, I redownloaded uphclean again from the
Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en&Hash=oFdiUVRDt8iC9N8TYl%2fCz2dV1a1rYj043Ur0y7C%2f0oUO%2baeMdKlQbDyCNQvvVF77ytY6XbT7Y7HBsqF097xDeA%3d%3d#filelist
Might be best to copy/paste that into your address bar; it's a long URL
and clicking it might not work. Be sure to get the whole URL.
There is also a README.txt file there, BTW.
And it's the exact same file I have on my drive. I used it to do a Repair
Install and all went fine.
So, unless you got a different file or didn't get it from Microsoft,
and/or it's not the one for XP, I'm at sort of a loss as to what's wrong.
So no matter what I do I get a dialog "An installation package for the
product User Profile Hive Cleanup Service cannot be found. Try the
installation again using a valid copy of the installation package
'profileclean[1].msi.
So, in light of the above, that doesn't make sense to me. Because of the
problems you had I'm not inclined to try to install the profile.msi version;
something seems messed up somehow.
I WILL stick with you though as I feel responsible for the problems you're
having, at least at this moment. I'm sure others might pipe in with more
info too, to someone else might have a better experience about the
profileclean.msi thing vs uphclean.msi.
And no matter how many times I try it, and in what variation I try
it, it's always the same result.
And that's where I'm stuck!
I'll wait for your responses before I say more; there are too many different
ways to go right now.
I assume, of course, that the .msi resides on a drive in the same
computer you are using it for, right? Don't try to run something like this
from a server or other machine.
Another interesting fact that might or might not have something to do
with this is that at about the same time as the restart/shutdown
sequence decided to take forever, my Windows Automatic Updates
download and install successfully, then immediately ask me to
download the same file again. Just for fun, I tried agreeing over and
over again, and it installed exactly the same Windows Defender Update
five times until I decided enough was enough. And this has been
happening with each Auto Update since this reboot problem started.
Something is scrambled, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what!
I can't comment on that I'm afraid, but it sounds suspiciously like
something the profileclean did because of its timing. Hard to say.
Let me know; I'll mark this thread for watching. Are you experienced at
using 'regedit' to clean up things in the registry?
Regards,
Pop`
Thanks again!
PS - just for grins, I ran a check on google for profileclean.msi and did
find a lot of hits but none of them were MS. There were also a lot of
problems with it that sounded like yours. Not sure at the moment what it
might mean.
