Thanks Ken, I get your point(2).

Good. Glad to hear it, and you're welcome.

Ken, I purchased XP upgrade July, 2004. I ordered SP2 disc from
Microsoft shortly after it was released, I don't remember the date.
XP Pro Upgrade & SP2 are presently installed. Now, here are my
questions:

1) I was just wondering if uninstalling SP2 would give me
access
to my XP Pro disc without this message:
"Setup cannot continue becaue the version of Windows on your
computer is newer than the version on the CD". Would this be true?

Yes, but nevertheless it's *not* what you should do, as I explained
before. Read below for further details.

2) If the above is true, then I should have access to the disc, be
able to use it for reinstallation and then reinstall SP2 as an
alternative to slipstream..............Right?

No, wrong.

Please read my earlier message quoted below. If you want to reinstall
Windows it doesn't matter whether SP2 is already installed on your
drive, because if you do the reinstallation correctly, the very
first thing it does is delete everything on the drive (by formatting
it). A clean installation doesn't care whether SP2 Windows, pre-SP2
Windows, Windows 95, DOS 3.0, Linux, anything else, or nothing at
all is on your drive. It doesn't even look at what's on the drive,
because it's going to replace it.

3) I had a blank monitor, could do nothing, took the tower to a
repair shop, they reinstalled windows using my disc (they say),
so how, in your opinion, did they go about doing this if they too
received the message I am now receiving?

Because they did it correctly, unlike the way you tried it. They
didn't receive that message. Again, please read my previous message
quoted below. It explains how to do this and gives you links to
three sites explaining it in detail. You can *not* do this by
running setup from the CD from within the present Windows
installation. You have to do it by booting from the CD.

Over and above all this, creating a slipstreamed CD *is* still a
valuable thing to do, because it will permit to do what's called a
"repair installation," if that ever should become necessary in the
future.

Please remember, I'm a beginner and my questions my seem elementary
to you. Thank you for your time. Steve

When I purchased XP Pro SP2 was not yet out. So, I assume I had
SP1 with my disc.

No, you could also have a copy with no service pack installed.

I purchased a SP2 disk and installed it. So, when I
place my XP disc in, its says in so many words, I can't install
because I have a newer version installed.
Question(s):
1) If I uninstall SP2, can I then use XP Pro for a reinstall?
2) Then, could I reinstall the SP2 disc?
3) Would this be an alternative to slipstreaming?

Are you trying to do a clean reinstallation of Windows? If it
doesn't matter at all what is presently installed. If you are
getting the "newer version installed" message, it's because you are
going about the installation incorrectly.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).
