RE: 2 Windows default, in dual boot on 1 drive

It could not repair it, when I hit 'R' it tried, but stopped, with the error
message that there was a virus on the drive. and shut down the computer.
Since I didn't know what or where it was, and due to the fact, that first
XPwould not recognize my printer, then my mouse and keyboard, both wireless,
I didn't know if it was a virus or a trojan, and if it had infiltrated my
banking! So I killed everything.
I was afraid to back up, as I might have been backing "it" up.
I have Norton's security pack, anti-virus, spam and internet security. w/
pop-up blocker etc. However, what ever it was got by.
As to the genealogy, it is all on hardcopy, so now I have a reason for
living, putting it all back into the program:))
I'll check out the referals, thank you.

Hi Ann,
Sorry for the disaster being part of it or not !., I given you the
instructions to repair the Boot loader not for installation.
But any way, if you did back up your data then you are safe, other programs
beside your Norton which I hope you have the full suite not just the scanner?.
If you have just the scanner (Anti-virus just) then you need a firewall, try
Zone Alarm.
For anti-spyware tru to download both these utilties and update them and
run scan regularly on your PC :

Dear Ness.
Thank you for your help.
I tried your suggestion, but it ended in disaster, (not your fault).
Windows tried to install, but came back with a error message, that there was
a virus on the computer, and it shut down.
Since I did not know where the virus was, what it had infected, and being a
woman of a certain age with no patience, I had no intention of tracking down
the pest.
I did a "format", "write '0' to drive", " Kill disk" and another write '0'!
Yes, I blew up the house to kill the bug, crying all the time, because I was
loosing 30 years of genealogy data. It had to be done.
I reinstalled XP, and now I am trying to find all my programs to put them
back. I am starting with all the security I can find for free in addition to
my Nortons. any suggestions?
Thank you again, for your help!
Ann

Thank You for responding.
I followed the instructions, as suggested, but all I found was:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows
[operating systems]

When I start the computer I get a screen that ask me to choose which windows
I want, looks like this:

Windows(default)
Windows(default)

Also in my "Add/Remove" there is no Windows XP;

I am stumped, and hating this OS!
Any suggestions, I am about to give up the 12Gb of date I have and reinstall.

I have somehow installed 2 OS on 1 hard drive, and cannot remove any of them.
I want to get rid of one of them. I know you need more information than
this, but what I don't know. If someone can walk me through this, I would
appreciate it.
BTW, it is XP Home v.2002/sp2,

Hi Ann,
Your boot loader is messed up and need rebuilding try these steps outlined
here:
1- Restart with your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM .

2- XP's setup program will automatically start and files will be loaded to
memory

3-When you reach the Welcome to Setup screen and you get the options for
setup, Repair Select the Repair option by pressing R.

4- This will start the Recovery console
5 - As you only have one installation on your PC you need to press the
number which is relevant to your installations location. This, obviously it
will be 1.

6- Type in your Administrator password. If you are using Windows XP Home
edition the administrator password is blank or if you didn't set up an admin
password for the installation by default will be blank so press Enter to
leave blank.

7-Now type bootcfg /list

8- A list will now appear of all the entries in your boot.ini file

9- Then type bootcfg /rebuild

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Editionl"
/fastdetect

You will get this:
'load identifier' : is the name you put in between the quotes "Windows XP
Home Edition"
'load options' would be : /fastdetect

10- Your boot.ini file should now be repaired
Type exit after editing the boot.ini and Reboot your machine to see if the
the problem has been resolved.

If not try to perform a clean install, but backup your data and Start with
clean install by deleting all partitions and creating a new ones and format
them.
