net.exe is a process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and
offers additional functions to your local area network via the command line.
This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless
suspected to be causing problems. This process can sometimes be used by
trojans but is otherwise a legitimate process.
Note: net.exe is also a process which is registered as the w32.dabber.c
worm. This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in
the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open its hostile
attachment. The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers E-mails
from your local computer and re-distributes itself. In worst cases this worm
can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal
data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your
system.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.
UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.
You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.
Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

In news:8E4C1EC9-C548-4F2D-B443-E70A6124FBE3@xxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Steve R <SteveR@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> hunted and pecked:
System: AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2.20 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM, Win XP Home
Edition SP2
After the Welcome screen on bootup, the system hangs for about a minute
with the C:\Windows\system32\net.exe DOS box on a blank desktop.
Finally, the normal desktop appears, followed by a very brief second
instance of the C:\Windows\system32\net.exe DOS box followed by a brief
appearance of the C:\Windows\system32\ipconfig.exe DOS box. Everything
seems to function normally after that.
I did notice that in the system32 directory there is a net.exe (42KB) and
a net1.exe (122 KB) both with the same modification date. I don't know
if this has any relevance but I would like the system to boot up quickly
as it has in the past.
Thanks.
