Re: Windows xp won't load

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Ok for some reason I am now able to log on in safe mode but all that comes up
is the cmd.exe and when I try to run msconfig to change start status is says
that I need to be signed on as an administrator. My log on is set up as an
admin but is isn't recognizing it. SO therefore I don't know what to do now.
Can you help me out? I have not done repair or recovery it just decided to be
able to go into safemode.

a repair installation is a method
that the windows setup cd uses
to simply compare the files on the
hd to the ones on the cd. And if
any are different then they are replaced
by the cd.

This is the safest method since
it preserves all the programs and personal
documents. There is more info on repair
installations at microsoft.com

but you can use the setup cd to
get to the recovery console instead.
this will bypass setting installation of
the o.s. and get you to the c prompt.

once at the c prompt be sure your in at
the c:\windows

then with the dos copy command

copy the file ntdlr from the setup cd
i386 directory into the windows directory.

and

do the same with the file ntdetect.com

then initiate these 2 files
by typing at the c prompt and
pressing enter:

fixmbr
fixboot

-- now try to reboot without your cd....

Will I lose anything? If not how can I begin that process?

have you considered
repairing or reinstalling the
o.s. with your winxp cd?
