Re: AntiVirus&Adware ETC...?

Question: Is it safe to install AVG with Avast already installed?

Yes. But run only one. When you decide which one you want to keep, it'd be
a good idea to uninstall the other one.

---Funny about Avast, it has either not detected, or I have contacted
no viruses in the past 4 months, and I am on this machine many
hours every day.

I have not had a virus for an awful long time myself. I have not had a car
accident for even longer, but I still pay for auto insurance. Auto
insurance and antivirus products are things that you need and hope to never
actually use. ;-) Same for antispyware applications. My last spyware bout
was self-induced.

I understand.
Question: Is it safe to install AVG with Avast already installed?
Yes, I agree, McAfee came installed on my Dell with purchase.
It gave me trouble after trouble. Finally, after talking with you and
others, I made the decision, 4 months ago, to remove all of McAfee
(I'm still paying for it thru May). And, I have eliminated many troubles
I was having.

I did not intend for you to dump Avast Antivirus and get AVG. As far as
I know Avast Antivirus is a fine product. I have never used it and know
nothing about it. Since I use AVG and am happy with it I do not care one
way or the other about most other antivirus products. Except for
McAfee, I will bad mouth them every chance I get.

I downloaded Spyware Doctor, did one scan, and removed it. Thanks.
I'll download AVG 7, look up Mike Burgess' Host File and investigate.
Thanks for all your help.

I would not use SpyWare Doctor. SpyWare Doctor causes chkdsk.exe not
to run with a Cannot open volume for direct access error for one
thing. I do not know if they have fixed this problem yet. The
problem has been around since about Feb 9 2006.

I use AVG 7 Free antivirus. And...
Mike Burgess' HOSTS file
Ad-Aware SE Personal
HijackThis
Spybot - S & D
SpywareBlaster

Whatever you run, keep them updated.

Thanks, I loaded the host file, I don't really understand it all, but
I do indeed have it now. Also, I am reading the sites you sent me and
am following the instructions you sent me. Thanks so much for the

Use only one.

2) Is it safe to have more than one Adware/Spam program installed?

It is highly recommended to have more than one. Some programs find
things that others miss.

SpywareBlaster is also highly recommended.

[[SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it
from ever being installed.
The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And
SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.]]

It is not a bad idea to also block crap with a HOSTS file.

Questions:
a) Do you/is this recommended?
-I only have Advast Installed
b) How do you rate Advast? Is it one of the best?
a) Do you/is this recommend?
-I have SpywareBlaster and Ad-Ware SE Personal installed. I
use both daily, when I start and before I turn off the
computer. I
was
thinking
about adding SpyWare Doctor.
b) Would you recommend this? Or am I going for "overkill"
