Hive problems, no XP cd, have backup system

Yikes, what a nightmare! I recently upgraded to a larger hdd, which I
made the master by running the system recovery CDs that came with my
computer (don't own Ghost, etc). I have the new and old drives
installed, with the master plug in the new and the slave plug of the
same cable in the old. Both are bootable, and both are running XP
service pack 2 with all updates and with virus control, etc. No
problems with either system until yesterday...

I used my computer at 8am, using the newer disk as the master. I put on
standby at 8am. Then I came home at 4pm to discover that, oddly, the
old system was up (recognizable by old wallpaper). I shut down, checked
the hdd plugs, restarted. Windows would not boot, and I was told that
....\system32\hal.dll was missing. I switched drives, and when I booted
from the old drive, it automatically checked the new drive and "fixed"
some bad parts. So I swapped the plugs again, and the new error message
says I'm missing ...\system32\config\SYSTEM. Here's where it gets
interesting: this file (config\system) was written around noon--so
perhaps there was a power surge or something? Anyway, I replaced this
file with the old ...\system.bak file (removing, of course, the .bak
extension), and it tried to boot, but couldn't complete. Also, I have
tried f8 and the like. I've been Googling for hours with no luck.

My situation is unique for two reasons: (1) I do not have XP on disk,
so I can't go that route. (2) I can access the drive via backdoor, from
my old disk, system.

Is there any way to fix this without destroying everything that I've
spent hours on, such as installing programs, getting updates, and so
on?

Thanks, John
