Fire wire not recognized

Using WindowsXP on a PC and trying to capture from my Sony DCR-HC21
video camera, my Fire Wire connection is not found. Device Manager
says I have a IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers > OHCI Compliant IEEE
1394 Host Controller and VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

Neither MS MovieMaker nor Pinnacle Studio recognizes the connection
when the Fire Wire is connected to my camera. Most indicative,
though, is that I don't get that "ping" when I plug it into the
camera. I do get the "ping" when I plug in the USB cable.

Unlike USB where I have several devices to use to check out the
connection, the camera is the only device I have that uses a Fire
Wire.

Camera or port problem, ya' think?

Or, hopefully, something stupid not done.
