Re: Unable to connect any MP3 player

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hi all again, and Elmo and Nass in particular.

I have solved the problem and it has taken me the best part of two days to
get back to a stable position.

The issue with the lack of connectivity seems to stem from the presence of a
Iomega zip drive and the related driver.

Details. To determine the source of the issue, I backed up all my system and
restored it to its earliest 'factory' state, and then added in all
peripherals, windows updates, and software on a step by step basis.

At each step I tested out the functioning of the MP3 players.

Each test proved positive until I added the Zip drive and the driver
(Iomegaware 4.0.2). The drive is connected to the parallel port and supports
an HP printer (Connected through the drive).

Once the connections were mmade (printer to Zip, Zip to Parallel port, and
driver installed), the problem I reported was encountered.

I disconnected the drive and removed the driver and reconnected the printer,
this time directly to the port. Everything functioned as expected. I then
continued with outstanding software installation including Media Player 11,
and touch wood everything in my garden is rosy!

I haven't had the time yet to determine whether it is the physical presence
of the Zip drive, the fact that it supports a pass through printer, or an
issue with the driver itself.

I will follow those up as soon as possible, but for the moment I have a
fully functioning PC and MP3 players.

Bliss!

Thanks for your time and advice.

Regards

Hello there all,

I have recently purchased two new 1 Gig MP3 players. On any machine other
than my own, whenever I connect them via the USB port they quickly flash up
the statement ‘READING’ and then ‘READY’ and then open the directory of the
incorporated flash drive. Exactly as I expected!

However on my own machine which runs Microsoft Windows XP, Media Center
Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, nothing expected seems to happen and
the following scenarios occur.

1. When the machine is up and running, connecting the MP3 player via any USB
port results in the MP3 player powering on but then going through an infinite
loop of stating ‘Reading’, ‘ready’, ‘reading’, ‘ready’…. etc. While it is
doing this most other applications including the start menu occasionally
freeze.

2. Sometimes after about 20 minutes, the message ‘New Hardware device
detected’ flashes up but this is not reflected in either Windows Explorer or
My Computer. Also upon entering these functions the computer similarly
freezes, but the ‘loop’ on the MP3 player described at 1. above continues.

3. If the device is already connected at start-up, the machine boots and
goes through the DOS prompts but then seizes prior to the Windows Starting up
screen.

To return to normal operation in any situation the device is simply removed
from the USB port.

All USB drivers are fully up to date.

I run Norton and having had some problems in the past I temporarily disabled
it. This had no impact.

At the moment the MP3 players are unusable on my own machine.

Am I missing something obvious in terms of my settings or configuration? Am
I stupid?
