SP-2 does not appear to be the OPs issue.
Returning to SP-1 or staying with SP-1 is less and less of an option as time goes on.
SP-1 is no longer supported and less and less updates will be available for that unsupported configuration.
Most SP-2 installation issues are caused by preexisting problems.
All problems, known and unknown, should be resolved before installing anything especially something as major as a Service Pack.
The Service Pack Installation Checklist can help make sure the computer is ready for SP-2:
