I believe you are right. My Created date is Thursday, August 19, 2004,
Modified Tuesday August 10, 2004. I don't know if I'll be able to find the
file from someone, and if I do, I just copy it from the disk, paste it into
the same folder and delete my old userint application?

It sounds like that free screensaver application HAS changed a support file.
on your system. That is why you are getting the message about 'files being
replaced with unrecognized ones'.
When you removed the screensaver, how did you do that ... using Add/Remove
Programs?
Somehow, hopefully, the screensaver when installed, backed up the files it
was changing. The uninstall should have put them back .... if you used
there uninstall program and not just deleted the file manually.
First, check this registry entry:
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
In the right pane under Userinit, check that the key reads:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,
If the entry already states that, check that file on the system:
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe, and check it's modification date, version
name, ....
1. Open Windows Explorer, go to folder c:\windows\system32
2. Right-click on userinit.exe (also check if there is another userinit*)
3. Select Properties and click on Version tab
Make sure that the entry looks like:
File Version: 5.1.2600.2180
Description: Userinit Logon Application
Click through entries in Other Version Information list box and make sure
all looks good.
Click on General tab:
Size: 24.0 KB (24,576 bytes)

If this is different, you need to find the original ... it's the same on
every system. Do you have a friend or work system you can put the
userinit.exe file on a floppy or e-mail it to you at home?

I have the first screen that has the windows logo and the loading bar, but
then when the next one comes up, its the image from the screen saver site
and
the user buttons. Its like the normal layout, just a different background.
I
didn't try to do this, I downloaded a free screen saver application and
then
removed it and its been like this ever since. Also, when it prompts me, it
doesn't give me a browse button, just "retry" "more info" and "cancel".

Do you have the Windows XP Welcome Screen (that has large Welcome with
User
names to the right), or the Windows Classic Welcome screen that has a
window
with a text box to enter User name and a textbox to enter password?
If you do not have either, then have you modified the Windows Welcome
Screen
with some external application?
When you said you have an image you downloaded from a screen saver site,
does this only appear when you don't login for a while and the screen
saver
kicks in?
How did you change the Welcome Screen?

I got a pop up message saying that for Windows stability I needed to
restore
certain Windows files because they were replaced with unrecognized
ones.
It
then said "Please insert your CD". It didn't actually say what CD I had
to
insert, but I'm sure it was the operating system CD which I don't have.
My
Dell didn't come with one. When I start up, my computer gives me two
operating systems to choose from, Windows XP and Restore Windows XP.
I've
tried both and I can't tell a difference in either of them. When I have
the
welcome screen, the background isn't what it should be, but an image I
downloaded from a screen saver website. Can anyone help me out?
