After bringing up the Recovery Console NOT THE Repair, do a CHKDSK /p and
check the drive. It may be a simple matter of a bad filesystem.
Also check that c:\windows\system32ntoskrnl.exe IS there.

Did you type in the installation number then press enter to log on? The
installation number is shown at the prompt, it should look something like
this when the Recovery Console starts:
Type 'exit' to leave the command prompt and reboot the system.
1: C:\WINDOWS
Which Windows installation would you like to logon to (enter to abort)?
At that screen you MUST type in the number 1 (or other as seen on the
screen) and press enter. You are not logged in to the installation until
you do so and any attempts to enter commands without logging on will
result in an Access Denied message.

My computer will not boot giving me a missing ntoskrl.exe file error
message. I have tried the repair console, but it will not let me copy the
file. I do not get a password prompt when starting the console. What can
I do?
I have another hard drive on this computer, can I install XP on this
drive, boot up , and then recopy the file? will this cause problems? I
also have an ASR disc made from my laptop. Can I use this to boot my
computer? both are XP Pro.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
