Perhaps you can help me. I have XP Pro, I have downloaded the file

install sp1a?

I answered your question in another group - but for your advantage and the
many who may be searching for this answer some time in the future...
First - why Service Pack 1a instead of Windows XP Service Pack 2?
After all - it's not supported any longer:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean19
To download the proper file:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You need to have enough space to unpack AND install the service pack.
For more information on what to expect:

However - I suggest you download and install Service Pack 2.
