the following is from a white paper for
laptops. and these also work from the
recovery console.
but you can copy as directed
below from the cd to the hd. i would copy them to
the root and then again into the windows directory:
---------------------------------------------------
To replace ntldr, enter
copy drive :i386 \ntldr
In place of drive , use the drive letter for the CD drive.
To replace NTDETECT.COM, enter
copy drive :i386 \ntdetect.com
In place of drive , use the drive letter for the CD drive.
To replace the Master Boot Record, enter
fixmbr
To replace the boot sector, enter
fixboot
The Recovery Console will ask, Overwrite system?(Yes/No/All). Enter Y for
yes
each time the question appears.

Thanks Ben,
Can I have the emergency boot disk saved in a CD room? If i'm not mistaken
the MS website had it on 6-disk floppy, or maybe its two different things.
It
would be better if I can have it burned on a CD.

make an emergency boot
disk from a functional computer.

one and transfer those files over.

Hi All,
I have bought a second-hand HP laptop with a pre-installed Windows XP
Home
Edition. There is no back-up CD with it.
A few days ago, when I started the computer, a prompt "NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I tried restarting - for nothing.
I seek help from MS website. They refferred me to the OEM. I have not
yet
contacted HP. I'm just trying here hoping there would be good souls
here
that could help me.
Is there any program i need to download? I have no floppy drive, only
CD-ROM
and flashdrive. I hope I can recover my files on the hard drive. Does
reinstalling new OS will correct the problem?
Thanks very much. I just wanted to fix the problem asap.

If Ben didn't comeback to you try this but wait for him if you wish,Get a CD
from a friend or make one from the other machine called a System Recovery
Disk on a CD and Boot with it your Troublesome machine by following these
steps:
Boot up with your Cd in the CD Rom and when you presented with Windows Setup
Options:
1- Install Windows
2- Repair existing copy
3- Quit
Select 2 by Pressing R on your keyboard, on the Command Prompt type:
C:\Windows>CD.. Hit [Enter..] on your Keyboard
on the new Prompt type this:
C:\>
copy X:\i386\ntldr c:\ where X is the Drive Letter for your CD-Rom
copy X:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ " " "
Please type one at a time click/Hit [Enter..]
You may need to rebuild your Boot.ini type this on the Prompt:
C:\>Boot.ini click Enter and you will see your Boot.ini you can Edit it or
if was intact leave as is, the boot.ini will look like this, be aware this
for XP Home so if you have XP pro:
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
You will get Boot Indentifier: Enter this " Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"
Boot Loader: Enter this" /fastdetect"
When you finished type: reboot (I'm not sure if iit is right you can Type ?
to get the list of commands and see if reboot is one) or Exit.
HTH.
Please let us know.

nass
Here is the link to download a bootable CD and Unzip it then creat a Boot
disk to start your computer with it, you can save it on your HDD and Note the
Path for it say for Example:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Nony\My Documents"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8fe6868-6e4f-471c-b455-bd5afee126d8&displaylang=en
Another useful link:

Please let us know your progress.
