Re: Moving XP to new computer

yeh, the o.s. will see
your new mobo as new hardware.

however, you can simply use your
win cd and do a "repair installation" to
re-sncronize the system files for
the new hardware, if necessary.

if you have the another harddrive
installed or acquired one with
the new pc, the cd may see it as well
and offer you the opportunity to
install a new o.s. on it. But it
might be helpful to only focus
on the old harddrive. After the o.s.
is snyc'd to the new mobo, then you
can connect a new harddrive as the slave.

Thanks for your feedback. OK, It was my memory failing me. (Got only 256MB
of it, alas...). I did in fact buy XP in 2001.

Im thinking of just moving the install to the new machine rather than
doing a fresh install. The latter will mean applying all the pacthes again
of which there must have been hundreds up to now. No?

My new machine will indeed take the old hard drive without problems. But
since the motherboard is new and from a different manufacturer it
problably have a different chipset which my present installtion of XP wont
recognise. No?

Johannes.

wow, you must have been
one of the real lucky ones
to have a fancy o.s. since 1996.

unfortunately, my time displacement
machine was in the shop at the time.

why would you assume that
you cannot install the old hd on
the new pc?

I bought a copy of WindowsXP Pro about 10 years ago and have been using
it successfully so far.

I have now built a brand new computer and wish to move XP to the new
machine. I assume I cannot just install my old hard drive in the new
machine. How does one go about moving XP to complete new hardware
without encountering licensing or other problems?

Many thanks,
