Mr. Blake:
Backround: Took computer to shop, they reinstalled xp pro with their disk
and used
my product key number. After the install, I notice, when I went into System
Restore, that Windows defender was checking my system about every 15mins to
1/2 hr..........it was eating up my System Restore Storage (I have it set at
max, 12%).........When I went to Computer>Properties, I noticed that my hard
drive was filling up by leaps and bounds.
Question(s):
1) Is this normal for Windows Defender, to do systems checks so close
together?
2) Can Windows Defender have its check points set for certain time periods?
And you helped solve my display problem!!!!
After I restarted/turned off computer the color quality switched to 8bits.
I had to manuelly reset to 16bit or 32bit each time.
Well, somehow the problem was with McAfee VirusScan. Once I removed it from
my system, I no longer have the color quality problem. That's great!!!!
Question:
3) How could VirusScan have been doing this?
Let me tell you, I was going crazy trying to troubleshoot color quality and
no one on this site seemed to have an answer, except to reinstall and/or
update the driver.
Somehow the problem lay with McAfee.
Also when I had McAfee installed:
4) If I clicked on the MaAfee desktop or the taskbar Icon, the monitor went
blank for about 10 seconds and then reappeared, why?
After Removing:
--VirusScan
--Firewall
--Security Center
All color quality probems vanished!!
Question:
5) Do you have any ideas why this was happening?
This is very lenghtly, but I wanted to share this infromation with you and
thank you for helping me. Make a mental note of this color quality problem
associated with McAfee and pass it on to others.

Installed: Nov. 12, 06--I took the advice from Bert Kenny MS-MVP
Shell/User I currently have MaAfee installed.
Questions:
1) Should I disable MaAfee VirusScan now?
Yes, you should have only a single Anti-virus program running at once.
2) Should I disable MaAfee Firewall now?
Yes, you should have only a single Firewall program running at once.
3) Or, should I just go to Add/Remove Programs and get rid of MaAfee
completely?
Yes.
4) I have SP2 installed and Windows Firewall, will these and Avast
4.7 be enough to protect my system, if I unistall all of McAfee?
No, the third type of program you need is antispyware software. I would
recommend at least two (better all of these) from the following list:
Spyware Blaster
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware
Windows Defender
All of the above are free.
5) Wesley Vogel (MS-MVP) recommended AVG by Grisoft for home use; do
they both protect about the same, or is one better than the other?
There is no simple answer that everyone will agree on. Both have their
partisans, but either is good.
