Strange behaviour with backspace key

I've just built a system from the ground up for a friend, using WindowsXP
Pro. Everything appears to be OK except for one problem I'm having.

I built it at my house using my mouse and keyboard etc., etc. but when I
took it to his house and used the new keyboard and stuff to set up his
internet connection, I was typing a URL into Internet Explorer and made a
mistake. I hit the backspace key but instead of going back and deleting the
last character I'd typed, it moved *forward* and - even though I was
pressing a letter key (can't remember which one) it inserted a hash (#).

If I kept my finger on the (letter) key it would produce maybe 50 or 60
hashes before eventually beginning to move backwards and delete the
characters.

I'm in the UK and definitely (at least, I think) I set everything for UK
english. I'm assuming it's a faulty keyboard - anyone confirm this or offer
any other explanation?
