folder was an "index.dat" file.
Has this changed with IE 7?

I can find a folder called "History" in several places on C: drive,
but there is only a file in that folder called "index.dat" - there
are no subfolders labelled "MSHist .....".

This is for IE6 (Should be same for 7)
Instead of backing it up, increase the time to delete history.
Internet options > Increase "Days to keep history ...."

The history folder can be opened by(It is per-user folder) :
Type this in Start > RUn
"%userprofile%\Local settings\History" (Including quotes)

Alternatively, you can view the history folder in explorer > View >
Explorer bar > History
