Re: Glen, DatabaseBen, basic question (hope)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Glen, Ben and Jim,

Thanks so much for replying to my post. I now feel like my "gut instint" to
NOT install this software was right! It just sounds like there are still way
too many "bugs" in it and like I said before, I don't want to end up back
here bothering you guys again! I will continue to use IE 6 until Microsoft
disables it or I will pick a different browser. I don't like Microsoft's
"hard sell" tactics to get people to download their software. First, they
"invite" everyone to download from a newsletter. Evidently not as many
people responded as they wanted, so they decided to use a "scare tactic" and
put it in as a "critical update". "Dirty pool", IMHO.

I use Automatic Updates but I have it set to just notify me. Then I can go
to the update site and decide if I want to download the item. I do download
most of them, but for instance, they had a multi-megabyte (not real word?)
download for Powerpoint. I never use Powerpoint, and don't even know how to
run it. I never open it, so why waste all that time downloading that update?
At first, I did have the full version "Automatic Update", and it didn't take
me long to regret that and change it.

Anyway, thanks again all of you, for responding. You are a pleasure to work
with. Now that I sent this little "pre-loading" question, I will save
everyone the agony of reappearing on here again with some major problem with
my computer due to IE 7!

BTW, Glen, I'm glad you understood that I wasn't "bugging" you! ;^) You
must get your important business done first. I'm just grateful that you're
willing to look at my log on your own time!

Happy Thanksgiving, all of you!

Sue :^)

Just don't install it. It is not a "Critical" update, and although MS is pushing it
through Automatic Updates, you do not have to accept it.....I haven't, even though I
was in the beta testing for it. I will eventually, but not right away. I am not
getting it through Automatic Updates even though I have them enabled, because I
installed the IE7 Blocker Tool in October, blocking it from downloading via
Automatic Updates.

Internet Explorer 7 Blocker Toolkit: Frequently Asked Questions:

Internet Explorer 7 will not install automatically – the Automatic Updates delivery
process will include a welcome screen that offers users choices of Install, Don’t
Install, and Ask Me Later prior to installation.

Even for those who want IE7, I recommend *not* getting it through Windows Update or
Automatic Updates, but rather manually downloading and installing it directly from
the IE web pages at Microsoft. It is important to follow the guidelines laid out
here when installing:

The entire site is dedicated to info and issues involving IE7:

BTW, I know you are not bugging me. ;-) I have not forgotten the log, I have just
been very busy this week with some urgent business, and will be replying to your
email shortly. Bear with me.

Glen, I know you are going to look at my HijackThis file, and I'm not
"bugging" you about that. Completely different question, and you and Ben
have been my "saviors" in the past.

I got my Windows Upgrade Notification, and I went to the site. I see it is
to download Internet Explorer 7. I see Microsoft wants to "jam it down our
throat". I had wanted to wait, because although I didn't read all of them, I
saw a lot of screams for help about this software.

Do you have any suggestions about anything I should check or do before I
download this thing? The last thing I want is to be on here again with all
kinds of problems! (I won't download it until I hear from you about the test
results I emailed you.)

Thanks, guys.

Sue
