Winxp Issue - Multiple Drive Letters for Same Drive!

Hi All -
Posting because I have just run out of ideas...
I have a fairly beafy storage setup for my file server (WinXP Sp2). It's a
Gigabyte K8NS-Pro running an Athlon 3200 754. It's running 8 drives, 2-120 GB
(raid-0) (c:, d:), 2-250 GB (raid-0) (m:), 2-250 (raid-0) (n:), and 2-250
(raid-5) (z:).
It was rock solid for over a year on the current install - booted up in a
flash, no issues. Dual-boot setup for Vista-32 ran perfect. Well I decided to
replace the Vista install with the new Vista-64 install. I pooched something
(realized that Vista won't do a clean dvd install on nforce - happened to
create a new partition on one of the 120GB drives w/o it seeing the raid
array) and since then it's been real sick.
So I did the following:
* Recovered the array/partition by re-writing the MBR
* Re-installed the corrupted programs on the d: drive (creating a new
partition on a drive in a raid-array really can mess things up)
Everything ran smoothly till one time, My computer showed had the same
drives repeating with new drive-letters. I went into Disk Management console
and it showed some of the drives with assigned drive-letters, others did not.
Ok, no problem, I re-installed / recovered my c:\windows install win my
winxp cd. This worked fine till I ran into other issues - like long boot
times, etc. And finally, it would just continue to boot up in winxp and then
crap out right before the welcome screen and start all over again.
Now I'm just telling myself to start back at square 1! I took the next step,
blow out everything and start over. This pretty harmless as all my
"important" stuff is stored on the m:, n:, and z: drives (with z: being the
triple backup due to mirroring).
I just finished re-installing everything, process I went through is below:
* Deleted partitions for d:, reboot
* Cleared my c:, d: raid-0 in raid bios
* Re-build the c:, d: raid-0 in raid bios, reboot
* Put in winxp cd, boot to cd
* Created a new c: partition (20GB)
* Format (long)
* Installed WinXP
* Created a new d: partition (180GB)
* Installed all programs etc
Now I spent the afternoon re-installing, tweaking, etc and just rebooted.
And guess what? The CHKDSK pops up in the middle of reboot saying that my E:
drive is inconsistent, and then my F:, and G:. Problem is I don't have an E:,
F:, and G: drives. It's the same problem all over again!!! It's creating
ghost drive letters mapped to the other drives, and when I go into Disk
Management neither the c: nor the d: have drive letters assigned.
More details:
* Swapfile is on the n: drive, though for some reason there always seems to
be a swap created on c:, though I explicitly tell it not to
* m:, n:, and z: are all "dynamic"
PLEASE HELP! This is driving me nuts. Windows seems to run ok, but takes a
bit longer to boot and ie7 runs like crap (don't know if that is related).
