Please don't piggyback into a thread, also considered as hijacking, even if you have a similar issue. Search the newsgroup first for a resolution, if you still have the issue after reading/trying the suggested resolutions start your own new post explaining the issue.
With that said, you do not have the drivers installed for your sound device and you need to install them. Go to the computer or motherboard manufacturers support site and download/install the drivers per their instructions.
If you don't know the manufacturer/make/model, download Everest Home Edition:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads9.html
http://basconotw.mvps.org/dwnlds.htm
Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the download to that folder.
Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application.
Click the + next to Computer.
Click Summary.
Look in the appropriate section for the device.
Go to the manufacturers Support > Download site and download the proper drivers for your device. As well download or print any Readme/Install file if it is available separately, it may be included in the downloadable driver file instead of separately. Install the drivers per the manufacturers instructions.

Right click MyComputer.
Click Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
Expand "Sound, video and game controllers".
Is your audio device listed and if so does it show to have any conflicts?
Double click on the device listed to open its properties.
Does it show to be working properly?
I have the same problem. Under Sound, video and game controllers it shows Audio codecs, Legacy auto drivers, Legacy Video capture devices, Media control devices, Standard game port, and video codecs. Under Other devices, it has Multimedia sound controller and USB controller, both with question marks. The sound card is built in to the motherboard. Can I install a PCI sound card to bypass the one on the Motherboard? When I play music in Media Player, it says I have no sound device installed. This is a fresh install of XP, SP2, on a reformatted HD. I just got the computer, and it was working OK when my Dad last used it. Also, I can play a DVD, but with no sound. HELP!
Terri
