A friend of mine had problem after the October's security updates were automatically installed on her new Dell desktop. Here is a summary of what she observed.
"On 10/12, after Windows installed an "automatic" security update, I began to get the following error message:"
"Generic Host Process of Win32 Services Error"
"When the message appeared, I sent the error report to Microsoft and received a message back about installing an update that "fixes the problem you reported." However, every time that I clicked on the link to the Update of windows XP website, I'd get a message from IE that the site was unavailable and then my computer would freeze! This problem continued through today, every time that I opened IE, I'd get the Generic Host Process error message. If I simply ignored it and tried to continue working on IE, my computer would usually freeze and I'd have to completely turn it off by cutting off the power. The power switch on the computer wouldn't even shut it down!"
"In an effort to solve this problem my self, I went to Microsoft's tech support website and found what I thought was the update to correct this problem. I downloaded the update to my desktop at work and then copied it a CD so that I could take it home and try to install it."
"However, when I booted up my computer this evening, I received a notice that Windows was doing an automatic update again. I restarted the computer as it told me to (I had to kill the power!) when I booted
back up again, everything seems fine."
I asked to record any errors from the event viewer for the period in question. Here is what she found:
" Errors were recorded in the Event Viewer - "Fault bucket 07918338"; another one is "faulting application svchost.exe". These two errors continue to appear in the Event Viewer and I'm sure that this is
the record of the problem that I kept experiencing with IE staying hooked
up to the Internet. I had sent an error report to Microsoft and when I
got a response about how to correct the problem, IE would freeze and lock
up my computer. (My original description of the problem.)"
My best guess is that the first time the security updates were applied one or more failed to install correctly. A few days later another auto update "fixed the problem.
Does this sound possible or does someone know what caused this problem?
