just updated the recent windows updates on another computer, a sony vaio xp
w/ sp1 still because sony said all drivers etc must be updated before running
service pack 2 update. Trendo micro pc-cillian upgrade was just done a few
days before the latest windows update, the system is about maxed out as it is
time to add memory memory as well.
When the system was rebooted afterloading windows update it hung there for a
min then a screen saying something about "press F8 to run in safe mode memory
dump" with a number that just kept increasing after memory dump. Pressing F8
did nothing so the system was shut off and has not been turned back on.
Any suggestions or ideas?

I am getting numerous errors and even FATAL errors right after
installing the 10/10/06 windows updates on Friday 10/13/06. I am
unable to use IE, or anything other than a few games that have
been on my laptop for months.

Uninstall the updates/use system restore to go back to before you
installed the update to ensure it is not a coincidence.

I TRIED to do the sys recovery, BUT it claims it can not as there
were NO changes. Any other suggestions?
Can the updates be removed VIA the Add/Remove programs?
Shenan Stanley wrote:
Yes. Make sure "Show Updates" is checked.
Did you go back far enough? A system Restore point is usually
made daily - by default.
Go back to before Tuesday of this past week.

The next earlier date was 9/28/2006 I tried to restore to there,
but it will not let me. I am not sure what is going on. I need
this laptop for Tue.

Well, that's good then - you have time.
So did you try uninstalling through add/remove programs yet?
Also - it sounds like your System Restore Points are probably a
bust - this happens more often than not in my experience...
Use disk cleanup to remove all but the last system restore point
*after* you have gone through and removed all the updates through
Add/Remove Programs control panel.

The system seems to ok for NOW. I am running a virus scan too.
I have read that Norton Internet Security can have some problems
with Windows. Is this true and if so any recommended Internet
security and virus softwares?
Well... first, let me give you one tip... Turn off automatic updates - at
least change them to download/notify you, but not install for now. You are
better off until after your *need* for this laptop has passed (Tuesday you
said) not letting this happen again.

Change it to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install
them" for your best of both worlds option!
And Norton - especially their home product line/total protections suites can
be pains... They use up massive amounts of resources with very little gain
over the competition which generally uses less system resources to do the
same job and Norton can be a bear to get off your system - even going so far
as making the thing unusable.
For that last reason - although I would suggest later changing to something
less resource hungry and possibly more effective even - I would leave well
enough alone for now!
