Hi people
A little, yet very annoying, problem has arisen on my PC and I cannot find
out why it is happening.
For some reason my PC went up the wall and windows got corrupt. So I
formatted and done a fresh install of winXP pro (with SP2). This PC is
connected to the internet via a wireless pci card.
The problem I have is that a svchost starts taking 99% of my cpu usage and
renders my PC useless, unless I wait for about 5-10 mins when the usage will
drop to normal, but as soon as I open IE the same thing happens.
I have ended the svchost process via the task manager but this knocks out my
wireless connection and then the only thing I can do is restart the machine
to get reconnected for the same thing to happen again.
I never had this problem before the fresh install of XP and it's obviously
not a virus, which maybe leads me in the direction of some sort of hardware
failure?
Is there anybody out there that can shed some light on this problem and
maybe point me in the right direction for a solution.
Which instance of svchost is causing the problem? Make note of the
PID number for the problem instance in Task Manager.
Then open a command prompt window (Start - Run - CMD) and enter the
following command:
TASKLIST /SVC
Locate your problem instance of svchost by the PID number and make
note of the process names that are running under that instance. Post
that information back here.
If Tasklist is not installed on your computer you can download it from
http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/download/winxp.htm
Good luck
