Re: win explorer restarts when i try to open control panel

Ok, did that and most open up fine. There are a couple that have an error
come up...."an exception occurred when trying to run
shell32.dll,Control_runDLL". The 2 that say that are called; igfxcpl and
wscui. I'm not to sure what these are, but would love to know how to fix
this. I have tried to do a windows repair with my windows CD but it says it
is an older version. (I installed SP2 from microsoft updates and my disk is
SP1). Thank you for your help so far.

*.cpl files are Control Panel files.

Test for a Corrupt Control Panel File.

Do a Search for files or folders named box, type *.cpl.

In the list of found files, double-click a ".cpl" file under Name.

The corresponding Control Panel item opens. For example, when you
double-click Inetcpl.cpl, the Internet Properties dialog box appears. In
addition, when you double-click a file such as Inetcpl.cpl a problem may
occur, if one does you can then figure out which .cpl file may be corrupt.

If no error occurs, close the Control Panel item. And double click the
next
one. Until you have opened all of the .cpl files.

You downloaded, installed, ran ShellExView and disabled all 3rd party
extensions with ShellExView and rebooted?

Make sure that you are malware free. See below.

To determine if this is caused by a browser extension (also loads with
explorer.exe processes), disable the tool bands and Browser Helper
Objects:

1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser
extensions
(requires restart) check box.

Open Control Panel, or folder window and observe the behavior. If the
problem persist, undo the above setting. Try ShellExView to determine
if a shell extension is causing the problem.

Using ShellExView, disable all the third-party extensions
(non-Microsoft), and restart.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and
anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode
can be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal
themselves in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will
prevent those applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses
or other malware allowing for easier removal.
