Re: disk drive disabled

The part that I can't understand is that under device staus it says that
TGhis device is working properly. I am not able to disable it like I can my
cd/dvd-rom device. Is this because it is the main device? The cd/dvd one is
working because I am listening to a cd right now.

enabled. When I go to my disk drive (TOSHIBA MK1234GSX) I get the shaded
box
that you can't click on under device usage. It doesn't say enabled or
disabled.

Double click the device in the Device Manager, Device usage is listed on the
General tab of the device's Properties. This can also be accessed through
the devices's Properties in My Computer.

If a device is disabled you can see it right away in Device Manager.

A red "X" indicates a disabled device. A disabled device is a device that is
physically present in the computer and is consuming resources, but does not
have a protected-mode driver loaded.

You will most likely get an error if a device is disabled and you try to
access it.

Code 22
This device is disabled. (Code 22)

Recommended resolution
The device is disabled because a user disabled it by using Device Manager.
Click Enable Device. This starts the Enable Device wizard.

Code 29
This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it
the required resources. (Code 29)

Recommended resolution
Enable the device in the BIOS of the device. For information about how to
make this change, see the hardware documentation or contact the hardware
vendor.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
Troubleshooting Wizard.

Code 32
A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver
may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

Recommended resolution
The start type for this driver is set to disabled in the registry. Uninstall
the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade
the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
Troubleshooting Wizard. If the driver is required, and if reinstalling or
upgrading does not work, change the start type in the registry using
Registry Editor.

Also, under location it says 0.

Means that it's the first drive with removable storage. They start

I just tried reinstalling it, same thing. Here's what it says in the
device status box:
This device is working properly.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start
the troubleshooter.

Also, under location it says 0.

Derek,

You might go ahead and uninstall the affected drive and then reboot the
machine. XP will then see the drive as new and reinstall the drive.
At the top of the device manager tool bar look under the "action" tab,
select unistall and then click "ok" and then reboot.
