Constant Blue Screen Crashes

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

os = Windows XP Pro SP2
cpu = AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 4400+
ram = 2 gigs OCZ
mobo = ASUS A8N-SLI premium
hd = Hitatchi Deskstar 80 gigs, sata (os is on a 40 gig partition)
(another matching hd for data)

I have blue screen crashes constantly, where I get the blue screen and it
says an error in some driver has occured. It's a different driver each time.
It could be the video driver, or usb port driver, or sound device, or
anything.

When the computer restarts it gives the option to report the error, so I
always do, and it opens a page on oca.microsoft.com where it says:

Error type : Windows stop error (A message appears on a blue screen with
error code information)
Solution available? : No (see Next steps)
What does this error mean? : Windows has encountered an error from which it
cannot recover and needs to restart
Cause : Unknown device driver
Computer symptoms : A message appears on a blue screen with error code
information (for example: e.g. 0x0000001E, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED)
Additional steps for you to take : Important: Please continue to send error
reports so analysts at Microsoft can study and try to correct the problem as
quickly as possible

I have looked for similar posts and I saw the idea to disable the shutdown
thing. So I disabled this by going to system properties / Advanced / Startup
and Recovery / Settings / System Failer, and unchecking the box where it says
"Automatically restart"

I just did this and haven't had another crash yet.

This began to happen since I did a system recovery where I reinstalled
Windows XP Pro. It didn't uninstall any programs or delete any data. I did
have to install the msi video driver again, and the web cam driver. But most
things seemed to work ok.

I had to do this because I could no longer get it to boot. At first when I
couldn't boot, I used the recovery console an ran FIXBOOT, and that fixed it,
but the problem kept getting worse and FIXBOOT no longer worked.

Some other details:

1. There's a small scratch on the Windows XP Pro cd-rom, where I can see
light through it.

2. I'm running both cores now, where before I was using one cause of games.
I like having both though. I don't know if it will crash with one.

3. I did have to reinstall the video driver and some other ones.

Maybe I need to go through all the drivers and reinstall them. And maybe
run the nVidia thing again. This is a cd-rom that came with my motherboard.

I could also just reformat the entire hard drive, but that will take alot of
time and I have so many programs installed.

And what if it's the little scratch in the Windows cd-rom?

Anyhow, thanks!
