update active x

I hope someone can help. When I am on certain web sites, I'll click on
something to take me to another page and I get this dreaded box that pops up
and says Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and
needs to close. When I go to manage add-ons it is enabled, but the update
box isn't highlighted, so I can't click on it to update active x which it
seems to need. The add-on that seems to be the problem says:
File: AcroPDF.dll
Company name: Adobe systems, Inc
Description: Adobe PDF Browser Control

Can anyone help?
