I think that one of windows xp features is the ability to close anything at
anytime without fearing the file crashed. And depending on the software,
like MSOffice, if you loose power in a middle of a document, the document is
preserved and saved. However, the problem of file crashes use to be a
problem a long time ago. I close programs and files abruptly sometimes, and
never had a bad experience with them.
If you need to close something that will otherwise take a long time to close
for you, do a ctrl alt del and close at will and to your hearts content.
Also, check your pagefile/virtual memory. Sometimes if its too small or
cannot automatically increase, you can get poor performance from
softwares.....
