Hi
See the following link to Doug Knox's web site and try the fix for the .LNK
& .EXE files:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Try Jim Eshelman's web site for the shutdown problem:

I reciently installed a cable modem on my system & had some trouble with
the
mouse. come to find out that I needed a new one. but now something else
has
surfaced.
whenever I open up a application, like the browser, I get the hourglass
for
a few seconds and it just quits. It does the same thing when I shut down
so I
have to cut power for it to turn off. I may be able to open a few things,
like a folder, but after a while nothing else works.
I have McAfee & I may have started the updates, but I don't think these
help.
I'm very close to reinstalling XP, but I don't want to lose any files.
