Probably not. If you're getting the message "Winnt_root\System32\Hal.dll
missing or corrupt: Please re-install a copy of the above file, that message
is *very* misleading.

I tried a back up of data and sys restore before I went to
reinstall XP Pro. Both told me a file was missing and therefore I
could not back up sys data, etc. I tried sys restore and upon reboot
I got nothing much. I then decided to reinstall XP from CD. I got to
reboot on the new install, and then this message about missing or
corrupted hal file. I cannot use Automated Sys rec. nor recovery
console to manually reinstall this file, I don't have a floppy drive
in my laptop to make the floppy, I can't use rec. console for manual
because it goes to the BLUE stop screen before you harm your pc - I
have tried installing both with the XP set up floppy and 2 new copies
of XP on CD. Anyone have a download where I can burn a copy to cd to
reinstall this file? I can't access a command prompt upon safe mode,
Windows will not boot up at all. This is the hardware file necessary
to make it all work. Help... I have been at a stop here for 4 to 6
days. Any help is greatly appreciated.. Thanks, :(

I just logged back on after trying a suggestion from before. I used the hard drive mfg's suggested solution and tried it, of course I came up with the same problem I've had. I get one of two screens, the one is listed above about the hal.dll file, the other is the dreaded blue screen - A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down etc etc, and then it goes on to tell me to disable any anti-virus etc check the hard drive configuration, etc. Then restart. gives Technical information: ***** STOP: 0X00000024 ( lots of numbers in ) ***nfs.sys - Address F71F0BD5
base at F71CA000, Datestamp 3b7dc5d0 - The only thing that looks familiar
in these is the CA - I have CA-E Trust Anti-virus - I can't get to it to
disable or uninstall - I had it snoozed when this all started. It may be the
root of my problems. Only God knows. or so it seems. Thank you, I will try
the above link you last entered on the 11th and see what happens there. Have
a good one. Sunshine

I've got good news and bad news - I used a download from my hard drive mfg
and was able to repartition and format the hard drive and install all of the
set up. Now after all this. I have another problem - New message - windows
could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt - System
32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys ----- Says I can attempt to repair this by starting
setup using the original setup CD and select r at the first screen to start
repair. ---I have tried this and get the blue screen with tech info as
listed earlier above. It doesn't attempt to repair... i either get the blue
or the black with above mentioned. I thought about going back and
formatting the hd again only selectiing Fat 32 file system and then after
getting XP back ontrack (if it works) then converting back to NTFS file
sys... What do you think?
