16 bit Subsystem problem

I am running XP Home, SP2 installed, all updates installed.
I have a 16 bit game I have been playing in Win 95 Compatability mode
ever since I got my present computer with XP installed, at least three
years ago. (I've had this since Win 3.1 was king!, and have not found
anything that I enjoy quite as much.)
Starting a couple of days ago the program began freezing. After
watching "not responding" in the Task Manager for a few minutes, I
have hit "End Task". It continues to hang up, until I get an error
message that "NTVDM.exe" is non-responsive, and asking me to submit
the report to Microsoft. Which I have done at least three times, and
got no response.
I then get a message saying the 16 bit subsystem may be unstable, and
recommends I close the program, which of course I have been trying to
do! It offers an "OK" or a "Cancel" button. So I hit the OK button,
and the program ends. I have rebooted and tried again, with identical
results. The program freezes.
Hopefully there is a way to fix this without re-installing Windows.
All advice gratefully received.
Thank You
