*How many HDs are connected at one time?

Have tried it with both the main drive and a slave ( storage only drive) connected and again on thier own. Set to both master and slave and then tried again as cable select.

*How many partitions are there on each HD?

Just the one with the operating system on it.

*Which partitions are Primary and which are Extended? Which Primary partitions are marked "active"?

How do i find this out?

With Disk Management. But since each HD has only 1 partition
and each HD boots successfully on your parents' PC, that single
partition must be a Primary partition and it's marked "active".

*What is the HD boot order in the BIOS? (This is NOT the device
boot order, but the boot order for just the HDs that the BIOS sees.)

the main HD (one with operating system) boots first if i have two
connected (see above) and when only one connected it is the first
(master) one.

I meant the HD boot order in *your* PC. This can only be determined
by looking at the settings in the HD section of your BIOS. Also, check
the device boot order (i.e. what are the priorities of the devices types
in selecting the type of device to do the booting).

*What are the contents of the boot.ini file in the "active" Primary partition on the HD which is at the head of the HD boot order?

How do i find this out?

The boot.ini file is a hidden system file just below the C: root,
i.e. at C:\boot.ini . You may have to unhide the file by
going to the Contol Panel, open Folder Options, click View tab,
under Advanced settings, select Show Hidden Files & Folders.

* Is your PC identical with your parents' PC?

No, but both are pentium 4 and have used both hardrives in
both computers before with no problems,
