So far what I picture is your XP has been installed on D as a dual
operating system and XP created a multiple booting screen for your
choice .
Read link for more info
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/multiboot.mspx
If I was faced with this problem I would solve it this way. Since your
pictures and other stuff where mistakenly over written I would solve
this issue the fastest and easy way by reformating D drive and make
sure it is set as a slave so it won't be considered a boot disk again.
Better yet, fdisk c& d reformat C & D then install Win 98SE, then
install your XP upgrade. XP upgrade are prone to failure and have more
problems becasue they carry over Win 98 instablities with them. My
advise it to purchase Win Xp SP 2. If purchasing a new XP copy is a
issue; I show a short cut of skipping Win 98 Se install. If you would
like to try to reverse engineer yourself out of this mess read up on
this link http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
