i do let it run, but it gives me the results, continues to the winxp logo
and then goes back to the same screen to 'check for consistency'..etc...
Question: why will it not allow the chkdsk c: /f command to run?? I have
run it in the c: prompt mode and i know there is a file system error, but
cannot figure out how to fix...i am not completely computer illiterate, but
stumped here..plz advise ifyou can.. thank you

Why don't you leave it for a few hours while it repairs the disk
and stop stopping it, sounds like you have bad sectors and it is
moving data about. The best time to do it is just before you go
to bed the same as defrag turn the computer on and goto bed
Failing that if you haven't formated your disk in NTFS put a
win98 boot disk in and run chkdsk from there you can not
check a disk while running windows XP

i am running win xp and for the last month upon restart it has been doing
the 'check for consistency', finishes, on the screen is the windows xp
logo..windows starting message and then it goes back to the 'check for
consistency, etc'..i have to hit a key to stop this. i did chkdsk at the
command prompt and it tells me to repair..i have tried the lang chkdsk
c: /f and the msg "volume is in use by another process" no matter how
many times i do it??
what am i doing wrong to correc the system file..
